Far Eastern University downed an undermanned and hurting Ateneo de Manila University side to take the solo lead in Group A.
Far Eastern University came back from a set down to silence an undermanned and hurting Ateneo de Manila University, 17-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-14, Saturday in Group A of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Tamaraws took the helm with their second straight win in as many games while dealing the Lady Eagles their first loss in two outings despite a sluggish opening frame.
“Sinasabi ko nga sa kanila na daanin sa bilis at huwag sasabay sa tempo ng kalaban,” said FEU coach George Pascua.
“Noong una gusto nilang madaliin kaagad. Nagmamadali sila kaya wala sa timing. Yung sobrang aggressiveness nila nawawala na sa tamang ginagawa nila. Kaya noong huli nagkaroon ako ng adjustments. Nagpalit ako ng tao,” he added.
Skipper Bernadeth Pons finished with 16 points with all but one coming off attacks while Toni Basas and Jeanette Villareal added 15 and 13 markers, respectively for FEU in the two teams rematch of the UAAP Season 79 semifinals.
The Lady Tams rained down 48 points off attacks and had six kill blocks and 10 aces including four coming from Villareal.
FEU faced a squad without team captain Bea De Leon, who was on an immersion, while Maddie Madayag (ankle sprain) and Ana Gopico (hamstring) were nursing injuries and sat out the match.
With the match tied at 1-1, the Lady Eagles lost veteran spiker Kim Gequillana to a left knee injury early in the third set and Ateneo trailing.
The Lady Eagles utility went down in pain after a bad landing and was stretchered back into their dugout. She is set to undergo an X-ray Sunday.
Ateneo mounted a rally to close the gap, 15-16, only to see FEU break free in the closing stretch of the third frame.
With momentum on their side, the Lady Tams controlled the fourth set and built a 24-13 lead. The Lady Eagles saved a match point on a FEU error before Kat Tolentino overcooked her serve to yield the match.
Jho Maraguinot led Ateneo, which tied San Sebastian College at 1-1 card, with 16 points while Tolentino got 13 markers.
