University of the Philippines kept its semifinals hopes alive.
University of the Philippines showed listless College of St. Benilde the exit door in the race for a semifinals berth with a 25-19, 25-13, 25-19, win on Monday in Group B of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Maroons notched their second win in three outings tied with idle San Beda College and Arellano University, which is still playing the also-ran Technological Institute of the Philippines as of posting time.
Diana Carlos scored 14 points coming off 12 attacks and a pair of kill blocks while adding six excellent receptions on defense for UP. Marian Buitre finished with 10 markers while Isa Molde and Justine Dorog combined for 16 points for the Lady Maroons, who nailed 38 spikes and had eight kill blocks that silenced CSB to only 15 attacks overall.
"Tingin ko maganda kasi ang game ng team ngayon eh. Everyone played good. Gumana ang mga plays namin kaya medyo lumamang kami sa CSB," said Carlos. "Ginawa namin ang mga plays namin na pina-practice namin sa training, nalabas namin sa game."
"Mindset talaga. Sinabi namin na wag kaming magpa-kompiyansa so focus lang and laruin namin ang laro namin," she added.
UP dominated the duel, pulling away early to dictate the tempo as errors and weak control of the first ball continued to plague the Lady Blazers in the first two frames.
CSB mounted a huge rally in the third set to cut down an 8-19 deficit to 19-21. But three straight errors by the Lady Blazers did them in before UP setter Rose Cailing sealed the victory with a heady drop ball.
The Taft-based squad dropped its third straight game in as many outings tied with TIP.
Ranya Musa, Marites Pablo and Diame Ventura scored four points each for the Lady Blazers.
