Far Eastern University continued with its winning ways and secured the second semifinals berth with a straight sets victory over the listless College of St. Benilde, 25-22, 27-25, 25-21, Monday in the men’s division of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Team captain Richard Solis led the way for the Tamaraws’ fourth win in a row in five outings with 17 points – all from attacks. FEU joined unbeaten and tournament-leading Ateneo de Manila University (5-0) in the best-of-three semifinals.
John Paul Bugaoan scored 13 points while Redijohn Paler added 10 for the Morayta-based squad, who sent the reigning NCAA champion Blazers to their fourth loss in as many games.
Mark Orian had 11 markers while Owen Bacani chipped in 10 for CSB, which was shown the exit door in the Final Four race.
Meanwhile, National University snapped a two-game slump while adding more woes to University of Sto. Tomas, 25-21, 17-25, 27-25, 25-23, in the curtain-raiser.
Fauzi Ismail scattered 19 spikes in the Bulldogs’ 60 attack points to finish with 21 markers. Bryan Bagunas had 15 points while James Natividad and Kim Malabunga scored 14 and 12, respectively, as NU evened its record to 2-2.
The Bulldogs pulled the Tigers down to 2-3 slate and handed UST its third loss in a row.
Arnold Bautista and Manuel Medina closed the match with 12 points each in a lost cause for the Espana-based squad, which failed to capitalize on NU’s 40 errors.
