Team captain Bea De Leon was glad to see Ateneo de Manila University rookies Dani Ravena and Candice Gequillana getting some playing time.
She lauded the newcomers performance – though short – in the Lady Eagles 25-11, 25-13, 25-13, whipping of San Sebastian College on Saturday in Group A of the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Ravena and Gequillana saw action for the first time after riding the bench in the Katipunan-based squad’s first three outings.
“It's very motivating for them to get a chance to play. When you're at that age, you're very eager,” said fourth year player De Leon.
“So I'm sure they're very happy and we're very happy and proud of Cassie and Dani,” added De Leon.
Open spiker Gequillana, younger sister of injured Kim Gequillana (left ACL tear) played in the third set in a relief role and scored two points as the Lady Eagles improved to 3-1 win-loss record.
Ravena served as substitute for starting setter Deanna Wong in the third frame.
Both players came in late in the third with Ateneo miles ahead, 17-7.
“Una, before pumasok kinakabahan ako, inisip ko na lang na relax lang and just do my best,” said Ravena. “Iniisip ko lang ang team kung paano ako makaka-contribute. I don’t think of those factors na, like 'yung mga fans, kahit naman maganda ang nilaro may masasabi sila. Maka-help lang aka sa team, that’s enough for me na.”
The victory pushed the Lady Eagles closer to a Final Four spot and gave them a good momentum heading into their last elims assignment against unbeaten National University next Saturday.
