Joyce Sta. Rita of San Sebastian College dropped 20 points as the Lady Stags dragged Lyceum of the Philippines University out of the semis picture.
San Sebastian College closed its campaign in Group A of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference on a high note after dragging Lyceum of the Philippines University out of the semis race, 25-15, 24-26, 25-15, 25-23, Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Skipper Joyce Sta. Rita scattered 15 attacks, three aces and two kill blocks to lead the Lady Stags to a 2-3 finish in the tournament that served as part of SSC-R’s preparation for the 93rd NCAA volleyball competition slated to begin two months from now.
“Marami pa akong gagawin. Magre-rely na lang ako sa experience ng mga players ko na naglalaro sa club. Dapat sila 'yung mga matitibay pagdating sa loob,” said Lady Stags coach Roger Gorayeb of his assessment of his squad, which will be trimmed down to eight when the NCAA wars begin.
Nikka Dalisay and Daurene Santos scored 12 markers each while Dangie Encarnacion had 10 for SSC-R, which had a scare from the Lady Pirates late in the fourth set.
LPU threatened to send the match to a deciding set after burying the Lady Stags, 21-18. But SSC-R countered with a 6-1 rally to move at match point, 24-22.
Rocelyn Hongria saved a match point for the Lady Pirates with a hit but setter Cherry Genova sent her service wide in the next play to surrender the match and LPU’s semifinals hopes. The Lady Pirates dropped to 1-3 and will end the elims on Monday against Far Eastern University.
Team captain Cherilyn Sindayen finished with 13 points while Bien Juanillo scored nine for the Intramuros-based squad, which gave away 35 points off errors.
