Far Eastern University moved closer to claiming a semifinals seat after sweeping Jose Rizal University.
The Bernadeth Pons-less Far Eastern University played with fire in the opening set before getting their acts together to defuse the Jose Rizal University Lady Bombers, 28-26, 25-14, 25-15, Wednesday in Group A of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Tamaraws bounced back mightily after absorbing their first loss in the tournament two weeks ago at the hands of National University and improved their record to 3-1.
FEU, which played without star player Pons who is in Singapore for a tour of duty in the Southeast Asian Beach Volleyball Championships, will close the elimination round against Lyceum of the Philippines University on Monday.
"Ewan ko ba mga pasaway ang mga bata," FEU coach George Pascua joked.
"Kasi siguro hinahanap-hanap nila si Pons sa pwesto kasi malaking bagay si Pons eh," added Pascua, who had a chance to field all of his wards. "Though nanalo naman, na-overcome naman so pagdating sa second set medyo lumayo na sila."
Toni Basas scored 15 points with 13 coming off attacks while Jeanette Villareal and Celine Domingo chipped in eight each for the Lady Tams, who gave away 32 points off errors.
The Lady Tams found a tough customer in the Lady Bombers in the opening frame as FEU needed its veteran poise to stave off the gritty JRU side.
The Lady Bombers kept the first set close until the closing stretch, tying the frame at 24. JRU went ahead, 26-25, after Basas sent her attack at the middle long.
But JRU captain Shola Alvarez’s service went short in the next play before Dolly Versoza smashed her spike straight at the net to surrender the lead back to FEU, 27-26. The Lady Bombers were called for a net touch in the set’s final play.
The Lady Tams returned to their usual dangerous selves in the next two sets to finish off the Kalentong-based squad.
JRU finished their first commercial league campaign without a single win in five outings.
Alvarez had nine markers while Versoza got five for the Lady Bombers, who only created 23 points in the match from 18 kills, three kill blocks and a pair of aces.
