Nag-usap kami ng management na focus muna sa beach volleyball kasi UAAP 'yun eh -- FEU coach George Pascua on possibility of sitting out Bernadeth Pons for the remainder of PVL Collegiate Conference.
Far Eastern University might sit out its top scorer Bernadeth Pons for the remainder of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference.
Pons skipped the Lady Tamaraws’ 28-26, 25-14, 25-15, win Wednesday over Jose Rizal University in Group A at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan for a tour of duty in Singapore. The fifth year player is playing alongside University of Sto. Tomas’ Sisi Rondina for the tricolors in the Southeast Asian Beach Volleyball Championships in Singapore.
Pons will return to Manila on Sunday but won’t be seeing action in FEU’s end of eliminations match against Lyceum of the Philippines University on Monday according to head coach George Pascua.
The mentor added that he wants Pons to focus in the 80th UAAP beach volleyball tournament set to begin on October 6 at the SM by the Bay.
“Sa UAAP beach volleyball lang muna (si Pons) kasi medyo galing sa (international) tournament para ang focus niya doon na lang muna,” said Pascua, whose squad moved a step closer to clinching a semifinals berth with a 3-1 win-loss record. “Mayroon namang pamalit sa kanya.”
Pascua hinted that he could sit out Pons for the remainder of the tournament.
“Depende siguro. Pero nag-usap kami ng management na focus muna sa beach volleyball kasi UAAP 'yun eh. Kumbaga pre-season lang naman to eh,” said Pascua, who is looking at Heather Guino-o as replacement for Pons.
Pons is averaging 15.6 points per game, has a 34.21% success rate in attacks, posts a norm of 4.55 digs per set and has a 31.15% efficiency rate in reception in three outings with the Lady Tams.
Pons and partner Kyla Atienza finished as runner-ups to UST’s Rondina and Jem Gutierrez in UAAP Season 79 beach volleyball tournament.
