Tigers solidify semis seat bid, Maroons upset Green Spikers

University of Sto. Tomas turned back San Beda College to move a step closer to clinching a semifinals berth.
University of Sto. Tomas solidified its position in the race for the last two semifinals berth after defeating San Beda College, 25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22, Wednesday in the men’s division of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Joshua Umandal starred for the Espana-based squad, putting up 17 points highlighted by 14 attacks. Arnold Bautista added 16 points while Tyrone Carodan dropped 14 for the Tigers, who evened their win-loss record to 3-3 at fourth spot behind semifinals-bound teams Ateneo de Manila University (6-0) and Far Eastern University (5-1) and no. 3 team National University (3-2).
UST will close the elimination round against winless reigning NCAA champion College of St. Benilde on Saturday.
Mark Enciso had 14 points for the Red Spikers, who dropped to 2-4 record.
SBC’s chance in the Final Four is already out of its hands. The Red Spikers need to win their final elims match against FEU on Monday and hope that UST drops its last match to force a playoff for the last semis spot.
Meanwhile, University of the Philippines played the spoiler’s role after shocking De La Salle University, 25-22, 22-25, 27-25, 25-23, to close its elims campaign.
John Millete exploded with 20 points, Matthew Gohoc got 15 markers while Jerry San Pedro and Wendel Miguel had 14 each for the Fighting Maroons, who finished their campaign with a 2-5 mark.
The Green Spikers closed their elims campaign with a 3-4 slate.
Raymark Woo scored 24 points coming off 22 kills and two kill blocks in a lost cause for the Taft-based squad, which need to pray that UST and NU won’t reach four wins to force a semis spot playoff.
