Coach Gorayeb tells Lady Stags: ‘Wala nang pabebe’
With Grethcel Soltones (second from right, standing), San Sebastian College’s star player for five years, now sitting with coach Roger Gorayeb (extreme left) on the bench as a trainer, the Lady Stags are scrambling to plug the yawning hole her absence has created in time for next season’s NCAA.
“We are doing our best every time we play, more so now,” said SSC team captain Joyce Sta. Rita.
The telling void Soltones has left behind is reflected in the 1-3 win-loss card the Lady Stags were touting as of Sept. 25 in the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference, another ambitious event organized by Sports Vision with Asics as official league partner and Mikasa as official game ball.
After splitting its first two matches, losing to Far Eastern University in straight sets and winning over Jose Rizal University in three in that order, the Lady Stags slammed into two successive setbacks to National University and Ateneo.
Known to be a volatile coach, Gorayeb, nonetheless, fully understands the situation his team is in. But what he won’t and cannot tolerate, said Guillema, the most senior among the Lady Stags, is for his players to go down in defeat without putting up a fight.
Included on the team are four rookies made up of Jewelle Bermillo and Elka Nicole dela Torre, both Grade XII students, Ritanhelle Perez (Grade XI) and Akeyla Renee delos Reyes.
The San Sebastian complete lineup: Jewelle Bermillo, Akeyla Renee delos Reyes, Elka Nicole dela Torre, Daureen Santos, Julene Anne Tiangco, Nikka Mariel Dalisay, Vira Mae Guillema, Ritanhelle Perez, Soccorsa Orsini, Dannah Dionne Amponin, Dangie Encarnacion, Alyssa Eroa and Joyce Sta. Rita.
