Ateneo sweeps elims, UST enters semis

Ateneo de Manila University swept the elimination round of the PVL Collegiate Conference.
University of Sto. Tomas nabbed the third semifinals spot while Ateneo de Manila University swept the elimination round of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference men's division at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan Saturday.
The Tigers joined Final Four-bound Blue Eagles and Far Eastern University after ripping listless College of St. Benilde, 25-14, 25-10, 22-25, 25-20, to close their elims campaign with a 4-3 win-loss record.
Joshua Umandal sizzled for the Espana-based squad, scoring 25 points off 19 attacks, five kill blocks and an ace while adding nine digs on defense.
Jayvee Sumagaysay had 11 markers while Arnold Bautista and Tyrone Carodan chipped in with 10 points each for the Tigers, who sent the reigning NCAA champions Blazers to their sixth loss in as many outings.
Meanwhile, the Blue Eagles continued with its perfect run after easily dismantling UAAP rival National University, 25-19, 25-19, 25-15, for a 7-0 record.
Marck Espejo poured 23 points anchored on 20 kills for the best-of-three semifinals top seed Ateneo.
Ishmael Rivera scored eight points while UAAP Season 79 rookie of the year Chumason Njigha added six for the Blue Eagles, which will take on the no. 4 seed in the semis.
The Bulldogs seemed to wake up from the wrong side of the bed and never got their game going to fall to 3-3 slate.
NU needs to win against CSB on Monday to advance to the semis and avoid a complication of going through a playoff against De La Salle University (3-4) for a Final Four seat.
Madzlan Gampong had nine while Francis Saura scored eight for the Bulldogs.
