National University flirted with disaster before surviving a tough challenge posted by College of St. Benilde, 25-27, 29-27, 25-19, 16-25, 15-11, to punch the last semifinals ticket in the men's division of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Bulldogs closed their elimination round campaign with a 4-3 win-loss record and clinched the no. 3 seed in the best-of-three semifinals against Far Eastern University.
Unbeaten top seed Ateneo de Manila University (7-0) and no. 4 University of Sto. Tomas (4-3) face off in the other semis pairing.
Francis Saura led four other NU players in double figures with 20 points coming off 17 attacks, two aces and a kill block.
Kim Malabunga had 17 points, Madzlan Gampong got 12 while Bryan Bagunas and Berhashidin Daymil chipped in 10 markers each for the Bulldogs, who needed two hours and two minutes to weather the Blazers' upset attempt.
The NCAA champion CSB finished its disappointing campaign winless in seven outings.
Ruvince Abrot scored 22 points off 26 attacks, three aces and three kill blocks for the Taft-based squad.
Meanwhile, San Beda College pulled of a shocker against FEU, 29-27, 15-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-7, for its third win in seven games.
Mark Enciso dropped 16 points, 23 coming off spikes, while Jomaru Amagan and Limuel Patenio got 12 each for the Red Spikers. Gerald Zabala and Earl Gonzales had 10 each.
The Tamaraws saw their five-game winning streak snapped and slid to 5-2 card.
John Paul Bugaoan registered 20 points while Redijohn Paler posted 17 markers for the Morayta-based squad, which got 30 of its 56 attack points from the duo.
The semifinals will begin on Wednesday.
