'Yun na rin ang sinasabi ni coach Air (Padda) na maging leader every time na kung anuman ang dapat gawin sa loob -- Adamson University standout Eli Soyud
With veteran Jema Galanza out of commission after a tournament-ending right ankle injury, Eli Soyud is assuming the role as leader and top scoring option of Adamson University.
And it helps that the transferee is bringing the playoffs composure she gained while playing with perennial UAAP championship contender De La Salle University.
Soyud showed a superb scoring explosion, dropping 23 points as the Falcons inched closer to a Finals berth after outlasting Far Eastern University, 21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-14, 15-8, Wednesday in the best-of-three inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference semifinals series at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
“Oo (nakatulong) in terms na ‘yung composure ko nadadala ko pa rin dito sa Adamson,” said Soyud, who will suit up for the San Marcelino-based squad this coming UAAP season after transferring from DLSU last year. “Siyempre yung kompiyansa na rin ng mga teammates ko para sa akin and sa kanila rin.”
Soyud, who played for the Lady Spikers for two years including a championship run in 2016 before leaving the Taft-based squad, is averaging 17.6 points per game.
Against FEU, she had 18 kills, four kill blocks and an ace.
Soyud's presence kept Adamson together during the crucial stretch of the pivotal match, considering that these Lady Falcons - aside from herself, Galanza and Fenela Emnas, are composed of players have never set foot in the Final Four before.
“’Yun na rin ang sinasabi ni coach Air (Padda) na maging leader every time na kung anuman ang dapat gawin sa loob,” said the opposite spiker. “And para na rin i-lead ang mga bata.”
Realizing the need for a leader to fill in the shoes left by the injured Galanza, Soyud willingly accepted the responsibility and she proved that she can play the role.
“’Yun ang nagmo-motivate sa akin,” she said. “Hindi ko naman iniisip ang score ko basta magawa ko lang ang role ko sa team at mapunan ang dapat punan.”
Adamson looks to seal the series on Saturday.
