I’m really excited to finally after ilang years naming magkalaban ngayon lang kami magiging teammates -- Alyssa Valdez on new Creamline teammates Michele Gumabao and Melissa Gohing
Exciting and interesting.
This was the first reaction of volleyball star Alyssa Valdez when she learned that veteran hitter Michele Gumabao and seasoned libero Melissa Gohing signed with Creamline for the coming 2nd Season of the Premier Volleyball League.
Fierce rivals during their stints in the UAAP and in the commercial league, former Ateneo de Manila University Queen Eagle Valdez and De La Salle University products Gumabao and Gohing will don the same jersey for the first time as the Cool Smashers look to capture the elusive crown.
“Sobrang nakaka-excite and sobrang bago ang lahat,” said Valdez, who never won a championship against teams that starred Gumabao and Gohing.
Gumabao and Gohing were part of DLSU’s three-peat from 2011 to 2013 and denied Valdez and the Lady Eagles the title in Season 74 and 75. The duo also led Pocari Sweat to the V-League Reinforced Conference throne in 2016 at the expense of Valdez and the Bureau of Customs Transformers.
Gumabao transferred to Cocolife in the Philippine Superliga last year before jumping back to the PVL while Gohing left Pocari Sweat after four years with the franchise.
“First time ko talagang magiging teammates ‘yung dalawang MG, na very well-known sa UAAP at sa commercial leagues dito sa Pilipinas,” she said. “I’m really excited to team up with them. Alam naman natin ‘yung talent and alam natin talaga ‘yung madadala nila sa team namin.”
“But definitely I’m really excited to finally after ilang years naming magkalaban ngayon lang kami magiging teammates,” she added. “Sana mag-jell din talaga kami as soon as possible kasi malapit na rin ang tournament.”
The inclusion of Gumabao and Gohing creates an interesting mix, as they will team up with Valdez and another former Ateneo star in setter Jia Morado.
“Excited and at the same time interesting din kasi iba rin ang pinanggalingan namin nina Michele and Mel and siyempre nandoon kami ni Jia,” Valdez said. “So sana ma-complement talaga ang skills and talents namin.”
With still months to go before the PVL Reinforced Conference, set to begin tentatively on April, volleyball fans are already considering the stacked Creamline side as a title favorite.
But more than winning championships, Valdez wants to build friendship with the MGs.
“I think the goal of the team is to perform well and better from the last conferences na pinaghandaan din talaga naming,” said Valdez. “Definitely, they’re super great help sa team namin. Aside from that, we really want to be a family with them.”
