A few minutes before Phil. Navy-Iriga began its campaign in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference, Iriga City Mayor Madel Alfelor-Gazmen was already looking forward to her team’s participation in the season-ending Open Conference as well.

“We are back,” said Bicol’s foremost sports patron, referring to the Lady Oragons’ return to the Sports Vision-run V League. ”And yes, we are also participating in the PVL Open Conference, if ever we’re invited again.

But first things first.

Her Lady Oragons, predominantly made up of the best players from Phil. Navy, and her new coach, Edgardo Rusit, had to pit skills and strategies first against BaliPure-National University in their opening assignment in the second season of the fastest growing volleyball tournament hereabouts.

And go all out for a win.

As the referee whistled to signal the end of the one-hour-and-37-minute thriller, Rusit heaved a sigh of relief and Mayor Alfelor-Gazmen effusively congratulated her players and new coach on their 25-23, 25-23, 22-25, 25-19 thumping of coach Babes Castillo and his Purest Water Defenders.

Imports Macy Ubben of Iowa and Lauren Whyte of Ohio combined for 44 markers for the Lady Oragons. Hezzymie Acuna contributed nine and Bicol pride Grazielle Bombita  chipped in seven to lead the locals’ scoreboard

Bombita and Shyra Cabriana, a recruit from Perpetual Help College in Las Pinas, are the only two carryovers from the Lady Oragons’ V League lineup in 2016, the year Bombita made her first appearance in a nationally telecast tournament in Manila.

A homegrown talent of Mayor Alfelor-Gazmen, Bombita hails from Tamban, Camarines Sur, and finished Financial Accounting in the University of Nueve Caceres in Naga.

It is for Bombita and other Bicolano volleyball players that Mayor Alfelor-Gazmen will continuously seek platforms for them to showcase their skills.

“I hope that when my young constituents see them on national TV playing in a big-time league in Manila, they will have something to aspire for,” said the mayor, who plays many sports for fun and competition but who is a huge volleyball fan and player first and foremost.

“Through our participation in the Premier Volleyball League, I hope to sustain the interest in the sport primarily generated by our previous campaign in the V League in 2016 throughout Bicol, as well as inspire our existing young players to strive for excellence in the sport where the Bicolanos were a power to be reckoned with in earlier times.”

The complete Navy-Iriga lineup: Florence May Madulid, Charmaine dela Cruz, Janet Serafica, Angela Kim, Grazielle Bombita, Shyra Cabriana, Hezzymie Acuna, Reynalen Raterta, Jennifer Fortuno, Macy Ubben, Lauren Whyte, Mary Jane Diane Ticar, Divine Eguia and Carissa Yvette Martinez.
