PVL: Celine Domingo always makes the right decisions

Key players from Far Eastern University led by Celine Domingo (standing fourth from right) and National University join hands with former NCAA and V League MVP Grethcel Soltones to provide the local muscle for coach Roger Gorayeb and the PayMaya High Flyers in the season-opening Reinforced Conference of the Premier Volleyball League.
Trust Celine Domingo to make the right decisions where her volleyball career is concerned.
This is not to say that the academically-gifted UAAP Season 80 Best Blocker from Gen. Trias, Cavite, doesn’t consult her parents whenever she has to make a major decision. She does, but her parents admit they still leave the final decision to her.
Like when she bolted the University of the East squad after playing for the Lady Warriors in her UAAP debut as team captain and starter no less to join up her neighbors, the FEU Lady Tamaraws.
After completing the mandatory one-year residency, voila! she reappeared in the UAAP wearing the green-and-yellow jersey tops, and as a starter as well.
So tremendously improved was Domingo this time around that she bested seasoned veterans from other schools, notably La Salle, Ateneo and National University, to the UAAP best middle blocker award. This, while playing a pivotal role in the Lady Tamaraws’ advance to the Final Four and eventually the finals.
With guidance from dad Cirilo and mom Lynn, Celine herself picked PayMaya, formerly PLDT, for her first club team with fellow Lady Tamaraws Jerilli Malabanan, Angel Cayuna and Czarina Grace Carandang as teammates in the ongoing second season of the eight-team Premier Volleyball League.
Nothing but a spot on the first team again for this willowy tourism student who keeps making her parents proud in the classroom and on the court. She started with imports Tess Nicole Rountree and Shelby Hollowell Sullivan, former NCAA and PVL MVP Grethcel Soltones and NU Lady Bulldog setter Jasmine Nabor and Malabanan in the High Flyers’ first game against the Tacloban Fighting Warays, contributing six points in their masterful 25-8, 33-31, 25-20 win.
How does Celine manage to always raise her game?
“You can’t go wrong if you listen and follow your coach and if you don’t cheat during practice,” said this bright student -- Top 3 in both Abiertas Radiance School (elementary) in Quezon City and Bethel Academy (high school) in Gen. Trias, Cavite.
Unless she is indisposed, she attends every training session of her team and doesn’t skip any of the strenuous warm-up exercises. Neither does she just bide her time waiting for practice to be over. “Every second, every minute during training should not be wasted,” she added.
The other members of PayMaya are libero Lizlee Ann Pantone, Aiko Urdas, Kath Villegas, Jorelle Singh, Alyssa Eroa and Joyce Sta. Rita.
Urdas and Singh are from NU while Villegas, Eroa and Sta. Rita like Soltones are former players of coach Gorayeb in San Sebastian College. Pantone previously played for Adamson U.
