PVL: Troopers barge in the win column
Philippine Army arrested a two-game slide and barged in the win column at the expense of Philippine Air Force.

BATANGAS CITY -- Benjaylo Labide came through with clutch plays in the closing stretch of the fifth frame as Philippine Army barged in the win column with a hard-fought neck-and-neck battle with Philippine Air Force, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 25-27, 15-12, Saturday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference men’s division.

The Troopers finally notched a win in the league’s second out of town game at the Batangas City Sports Coliseum here after three tries.

“Talagang kailangan namin ng panalo and ‘yung pagkatalo namin ng dalawang sunod, siyempre kailangan ng huddle, kailangan isa-isahin ko. So ang sabi ko nga sa kanila, isipin natin na matalo na tayo sa ibang teams huwag lang sa Air Force,” said Army coach Rico De Guzman. “Pride na lang ang paglalabanan.”

Labide finished with 20 points off 17 attacks including two of the Troopers’ last three points that sent the Jet Spikers reeling to their first loss in two outings.

John Depamaylo added 12 markers while PJ Rojas and Nico Ramirez scored 11 each for Army, which was sharp on the service line with 12 service aces including six from Ramirez.

The Troopers raced to an 8-5 lead in the fifth only to see Air Force tie it at 8. Army answered with three straight points capped by Ramirez’s ace for an 11-8 lead.

Reigning Most Vauable Player Ranran Abdilla and Reuben Inaudito answered with back-to-back attacks before Army blasted a 3-1 scoring spurt to move at match point.

Inaudito saved a match point before Labide sealed the match.

“Siguro sa panalo namin, na mini-mize namin ang errors namin lalo na sa service, sa blocking at floor defense,” added De Guzman. “Gumana lahat ‘yun kaya kami nanalo ngayong araw na ‘to.”

Fauzi Ismail and Abdilla each had 24 points while Inaudito and Reyson Fuentes chipped in with eight markers each for Air Force.
