BaliPure-National University captured its second straight win at the expense of Tacloban.
BaliPure-National University survived an end game scare by gritty Tacloban before closing out its second straight win, 25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22, Saturday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference at the Batangas City Sports Coliseum.
American import Janisa Johnson paced the Water Defenders, who improved their record to 2-1 tied with Creamline, with 27 points off 22 attacks and five kill blocks. American reinforcement Alexis Mattthews had 23 markers anchored on 19 kills, three kill blocks and an ace for BaliPure, which dodged a fourth set collapse after building an early 8-1 lead.
Youthful setter Joyme Cagande tallied 41 excellent sets to help the Water Defenders pummel Tacloban with 56 attack points.
The Fighting Warays slowly chipped away their early deficit in the fourth frame with Shola Alvarez hitting back-to-back kills to close the gap, 23-22. Matthews smashed a hit to put BaliPure-NU at match point before Johnson hammered the match-clinching down the line hit.
“I think everyone's getting their chemistry na. If I'm gonna sum it up to one word, I think that's chemistry,” said BaliPure coach Babes Castillo. “We still have to work on our resistance and how we can sustain ourselves inside the court and our quick thinking.”
The Fighting Warays dropped to 2-2 slate.
Thai import Hyapha Amporn finished with 22 points while Alvarez and Jovielyn Prado had 11 and nine markers, respectively, for Tacloban.
