Itís a good experience, a nice debut and a nice start. Konting practice pa I guess before I get the hang of it -- newest ABS-CBN S+A PVL analyst coach Oliver Almadro
BATANGAS CITY -- If new Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles head coach Oliver Almadro would rate himself from one to 10 after his debut as a volleyball analyst, the good-natured mentor would give himself a rating of six.
Almadro joined anchor Eric Tipan and anchor at large Vince Velasco at the panel’s table Sunday as they called the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference game between Petro Gazz and BanKo at the Batangas City Sports Coliseum here live on ABS-CBN S+A.
“Mga five or six siguro. Medyo kasi kailangan ko pa ng timing,” said Almadro, who was recently named as replacement for resigned Lady Eagles coach Tai Bundit after steering the Blue Eagles to a three-peat in the UAAP from Season 77 to 79.
“Pero sabi naman nila OK daw,” he added. “Pero sa akin siyempre I have to perfect it pa para mas maintindihan ng marami. So mga six ang grade ko.”
Almadro got the invite as an analyst last Wednesday. He definitely enjoyed his stint.
“Di ako nakikita ng madalas sa camera kaya OK lang. Kapag sa game laging may camera, kaya nakikita puro galit eh,” he joked. “It’s a good experience, a nice debut and a nice start. Konting practice pa I guess before I get the hang of it.”
After coaching for decades, Almadro seemed to like his new role of sharing his knowledge to those watching the exciting games on live TV.
“It’s so nice to share ‘yung knowledge mo, ‘yung nalalaman mo sa game, malaking bagay ‘yun,” said Almadro. “Hindi kasi lahat ng nanonood nagba-volleyball talaga. You explain it to them from a point of view of a coach, point of view of a player, malaking tulong sa kanila yun.”
“I’m happy nan a-consider ako ng ABS-CBN to be guest panelist,” he added. “Masaya pala. Yun nga lang at first nakaka-nerbyos kasi siyempre everybody’s watching you. Hindi na ito game eh, kumbaga ibang senaryo naman.”
And oh, as baptism of fire, the game was decided in five sets.
Petro Gazz completed a 15-25, 18-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-9 win to barge in the win column.
“Oo nga eh, kinatantyawan nga ako, good debut daw,” said Almadro, who came early in the venue to coach Cignal in the men’s match against PLDT in the morning curtain-raiser.
“Sabi ko napasarap lang siguro ang usapan, yung kwentuhan kaya pinaabot ng five sets. Maganda ang laban,” he said. “Masarap pala na nandoon ka, pinapanood mo yung game at may kinakausap ka.”
