BATANGAS CITY -- Petro Gazz clawed its way back from a two-set hole to grab the much-needed first win over BanKo, 15-25, 18-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-9, Sunday and arrest a three-game skid in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference at the Batangas City Sports Coliseum here.
The Angels, which played without top local scorer Rachel Austero after aggravating a lingering left shin stress fracture, banked on their solid net defense in the fifth set to put the Perlas Spikers’ attacks that were effective in the first two frames in check.
Ukranian import Anastasia Trach and Kadi Kullerkann of Estonia showed the way for Petro Gazz, which improved to 1-3 win-loss card tied with their victim. Even the locals displayed great effort with Paneng Mercado turning back the hands of time with her vintage deadly attacking while Cherry Nunag, who was elevated in the lineup to replace Austero who will be out for the conference, stepped up big time at the net.
Wensh Tiu, who went down with a right foot injury late in the fourth frame, delivered quality minutes while Mary Anne Mendrez chipped in on offense in the fifth that gave Petro Gazz a comfortable 11-6 lead.
Trach waxed-hot with 27 points anchored on 23 attacks and four kill blocks while adding 16 digs. Kullerkann had 16 markers for the Angels, who tweaked their rotation to strengthen their game at the middle.
"Nagpalit din tayo ng ikot ng tao eh, so may mga nag-sacrifice ng puwesto. 'Yung mga naglalaro ng wing, pinaglaro natin ng middle so thank you sa kanila nag-sacrifice sila," said Petro Gazz coach Jerry Yee, who moved Kullerkann at the middle to help Nunag.
Nunag had 14 points, Tiu got 10 markers while setter Chie Saet tallied 44 excellent sets for the Angels. Libero Rica Enclona posted 24 excellent receptipons and 19 digs for a superb effort in floor defense for Petro Gazz.
The Angels after dropping the first two sets turned the tables around with a huge 13-2 scoring spurt in the third frame to turn a 12-16 deficit to a confidence-building set win that sparked the comeback and send the Perlas Spikers reeling to their third straight loss.
Thai import Jutarat Montripila scored 27 while American Kia Bright finished with 23 as the only BanKo players in double figures.
