PLDT Home Fibr snatched its first win at the expense of defending champion Cignal.
BATANGAS CITY --- PLDT Home Fibr and defending champion Cignal entertained the crowd inside the Batangas City Sports Coliseum here on a sunny Sunday with great display of firepower and swag.
But it was the spunky hitter Mark Alfafara and his Ultra Fast Hitters crew that prevailed in the thrilling shootout over Marck Espejo’s HD Spikers, 25-20, 26-24, 26-28, 25-23, to barge in the win column and end a two-game slump in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference men’s play.
Alfafara with his power and court antics that drew reactions from the crowd and a yellow card in the fourth set, bullied his way to game-high 29 points anchored on 26 attacks.
Skipper John Vic De Guzman added 21 markers while Henry Pecana and Jayvee Sumagaysay had 11 and nine points, respectively, for PLDT, which took its first win in three games.
Ronchette Villegas orchestrated the Ultra Fast Hitters’ fluid offense with 54 excellent sets that paved the way for PLDT to rain down 68 attack points to frustrate the HD Spikers net and floor defense.
“We prepared for this match. Ewan ko parang gusto nilang manalo against Cignal and well-rested sila, I made sure na well-rested sila for this game and big factor na nagdyi-jell na sila,” said PLDT head coach Odjie Mamon.
The HD Spikers gave the Ultra Fast Hitters a scare late in the fourth set after cutting a 20-23 deficit to 22-23. PLDT moved at match point, Cignal saved a point before yielding.
Espejo had 26 points off 21 spikes, four kill blocks and a kill while Rex Intal and Ysay Marasigan finished with 14 and 11 markers, respectively, for the 1-1 HD Spikers.
