PVL: Water Defenders claim third straight win, share of lead

BaliPure-National University claimed its third straight win for a share of the lead while sending BanKo reeling to its fourth defeat in a row.
High school star Princess Robles delivered the crushing blows in the thrilling extended fourth set to tow BaliPure-National University to its third straight win over veteran-laden BanKo, 25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 32-30, Wednesday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
After Perlas Spikers' Thai import Jutarat Montripila tied the fourth frame at 30, Robles scored on a hit to push the Water Defenders at match point before nailing the game-clinching service ace as BaliPure moved up to a share of the lead with Creamline and PayMaya at 3-1 win-loss record.
American import Janisa Johnson displayed her scoring prowess with game-high 30 points off 26 attacks, two kill blocks and two aces while adding 18 excellent receptions and 17 digs for an all-around performance for the Water Defenders, who defeated an opponent composed of the original core of BaliPure that saw action in the defunct V-League two years ago.
Reinforcement Alexis Mattews had 18 markers while Alyssa Solomon and Robles scored 12 and nine points, respectively, for the Water Defenders, who rained down 66 attacks behind skipper and reigning UAAP Best Setter Joyme Cagande's 54 excellent sets. Libero Jennifer Nierva tallied 23 excellent receptions and 17 digs for BaliPure.
BanKo reached set point, 24-23, in the fourth frame before Johnson scored on back-to-back hits to put BaliPure at match point. The Perlas Spikers saved three match points before taking a 28-27 lead.
The Water Defenders saved two set points before taking a 30-29 lead off young middle Ivy Lacsina's kill block on Montripila. The Tha import tied it at 30 before Robles' heroics.
The Perlas Spikers absorbed their fourth straight defeat in five games.
Montripila had 18 points while American Kia Bright scored 15 as the onlye BanKo players in double figures. Skipper Sue Roces and Dzi Gervacio combined for 15 markers for the Perlas Spikers.
