BanKo arrested a four-game losing skid with a thrilling come-from-behind five-set upset over PayMaya.
BanKo cashed in on Nicole Tiamzon’s heroics in the fifth set to snap a four-game slide to complete a come-from-behind 18-25, 18-25, 25-19, 25-22, 15-11, win over PayMaya Saturday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
The former University of the Philippines hitter Tiamzon scored five of her 11 points in the deciding frame to deliver the Perlas Spikers second win in six games.
American import Kia Bright finished with 25 points anchored on 23 attacks and two kill blocks while Thai reinforcement Jutarat Montripila had 24 markers including 22 off kills for BanKo, which survived High Flyer American import Tess Rountree’s 39-point explosion.
With momentum on their side after stealing the third and fourth sets, the Perlas Spikers built an 11-8 lead. PayMaya rallied to close the gap, 12-11, before Bright scored on a next play followed by back-to-back errors by the High Flyers as BanKo walked away with an upset.
“Pahirapan ang panalo naming, pero kahit papaano na-relieve kami kasi emotionally drained ang team dahil sa sunud-sunod na talo,” said a very relieved Banko head coach Dong Dela Cruz.
The High Flyers were sharp in the first two frames before slowly fizzling out.
Rountree hammered 31 spikes and had five kill blocks and three service aces for PayMaya, which fell to 3-2 card.
American Shelby Sullivan had 13 markers while Jerrili Malabanan and Celine Domingo chipped in 11 and nine points, respectively, for the High Flyers.
