Tacloban arrested a two-game slide with a quick work of skidding Iriga-Navy.
Tacloban weathered a gritty third set stand from Iriga-Navy to eke out a 25-20, 25-22, 27-25 victory that snapped the Fighting Warays’ two-game slide Wednesday Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Thai import Hyapha Amporn scored 18 points anchored on 14 kills and four kill blocks while Patchareee Saengmuang, who replaced Thai compatriot Sasiwimol Sangpan, debuted with 11 markers and nine digs for the Fighting Warays.
Heather Guino-o had eight points while Jovielyn Prado finished with five for Tacloban, which improved to 3-3 win-loss record tied with Petro Gazz and defending champion Pocari Sweat-Air Force.
The Fighting Warays squandered a 23-19 lead and went behind 24-23 in the third set. Tacloban tied it at 24 before saving another set point to knot it at 25. Shola Alvarez pushed the Fighting Warays at match point with a kill before Iriga-Navy American import Macy Ubben surrendered the match with an attack that went long.
“Sabi ko nga sa kanila, hindi pa tayo tapos pero nagrerelax-relax na,” said Tacloban coach Nes Pamilar, who replaced the underperforming Sangpan with the more experienced Saengmuang. “Lamang ng ilang points, yun na naman, yung dating sakit bumabalik na naman.”
“Yung first ball nawawala na naman. Pinaalala ko lang yung nangyari sa amin nung last game namin, dun kami natalo. Yung mali namin, first ball lagi,” he added.
Ubben tallied all but one of her 20 points from spikes while Lauren Whyte scored 13 for the Lady Oragons, who absorbed their fourth straight loss in five games.
