PVL: Perlas Spikers end prelims on high note
BanKo closed the preliminary round with back-to-back wins at the expense of the skidding Iriga-Navy.

BanKo survived a comeback scare from the skidding Iriga-Navy in the closing stretch of the fourth set to walk away with a morale-boosting 25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 28-26, win Sunday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Perlas Spikers closed their preliminary round campaign with a 3-4 win-loss record capped by back-to-back wins as BanKo heads into the round robin quarterfinals.

American Kia Bright showed the way for the Perlas Spikers with 27 points anchored on 22 kills, four kill blocks and an ace while Thai import Jutarat Montripila finished with 23 markers.

“Ang nangyari sa fourth set medyo nawala ang pasa pero hindi pa rin bumigay ang mga bata eh. Talagang gusto nilang manalo, ayaw nilang matalo ulit,” said BanKo head coach Dong Dela Cruz, whose squad stopped a four-game skid with a come-from-behind five-set win over semis-bound PayMaya last week.

The Perlas Spikers squandered four match points after taking a 24-22 lead in the fourth set before Bright pounded a go-ahead kill for a 27-26 advantage followed by setter Jem Ferrer’s heady drop ball to end the duel.

American Lauren Whyte poured 26 points with 12 excellent digs but all her efforts went down the drain with Iriga’s fifth straight defeat in six games.

American reinforcement Macy Ubben had 17 while Cyndy Imbo finished with six for the Lady Oragons.
