BaliPure-National University arrested a three-game skid with a five-set quarterfinals opening day win over Iriga-Navy.
BaliPure-National University stopped a three-game slump with hard-earned 25-17, 18-25, 20-25, 26-24, 18-16, win over skidding Iriga-Navy on Saturday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference quarterfinals opener at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Water Defenders needed to hang tough in the closing stretch of the extended fifth set against the same rival that handed them a four-set loss in the preliminary round to take the opening day win tied with BanKo in the round robin quarters.
American import Janisa Johnson scored 27 points off 22 kills, three kill blocks and two aces while adding 15 digs for BaliPure-NU. Alexis Matthews added 19 while Mhicaela Belen and Roselyn Doria had 14 and 13 markers, respectively.
BaliPure squandered a 12-9 lead in the fifth and even went behind, 16-15, after committing a four-touch error.
Reiging UAAP high school Most Valuable Player Michaela Belen tied it at 16 before Audrey Paran pushed the Water Defenders at match point on a hit off Iriga’s misreception. BaliPure sealed the win on a sorry setting error by Shyra Cabriana on Divine Eguia.
The Water Defenders came back from a 16-19 deficit in the fourth set with four straight points capped by Belen’s hit to give BaliPure a 20-19 lead. Iriga-Navy tied it at 21 before BaliPure scored the next two points for a 23-21 advantage.
Johnson pushed the Water Defenders at set point before American import Macy Ubben tied it with a down the line hit but Angela Kim committed a service error in the next play before BaliPure forced the decider with a hit.
Iriga-Navy continued with its losing woes as the Lady Oragons absorbed its seventh straight defeat.
Ubben dropped 32 points, 30 from attacks, while American Lauren Whyte had 23 for the Lady Oragons.
