At last, Iriga-Navy has barged into the win column in the round robin quarterfinals
Both Iriga-Navy and Tacloban were winless and determined for a win heading into their match in the quarterfinals of the Premier Volleyball League Season 2.
In the end, however, it was the Lady Oragons who made magic happen, battling back from two points down late to score a much-needed five-set triumph over the Fighting Warays, 25-9, 21-25, 26-28, 25-21, and 15-13, on Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Lauren Whyte proved her clutch credentials in accounting for half of her team’s last four points. In all, she had 25 markers to her name, with all but two coming from kills.
Behind its American reinforcement, Iriga-Navy rallied from an 11-13 deficit in the fifth set to finally get on the board in the round robin quarterfinals. “Marami kaming laro na ‘di kami nanalo kaya uhaw talaga yung team na manalo,” head coach Egay Rusit said.
Whyte was the star, but it was actually Macy Ubben and reserve Shyra Cabriana who finished the job with a block and an ace, respectively, that eventually evened their team’s record to 1-2.
Ubben, herself an American, wound up with 25 points while Grazielle Bombita also had eight markers to her name.
With the win, the Lady Oragons moved forward to fifth in the leaderboard of the round robin quarterfinals for the last two spots in the semifinals.
Disputing those last two spots with Iriga-Navy and Tacloban are BaliPure, BanKo-Perlas, Petro Gazz, and Pocari Sweat-Philippine Air Force.
Even with the win, though, the Lady Oragons still need much help from the other teams while taking care of business against BanKo Perlas in their last assignment. “Kung ito na ang last two games namin, kailangang lumaban kami hanggang sa huli para mabawi namin yung mga laro naming natalo,” Rusit remarked.
Needing even more help is Tacloban which remained winless after three matches.
Import Amporn Hyapha paced them with 20 points while NCAA MVP Shola Alvarez chipped in 10 markers.
The top two finishers in the round robin quarterfinals will move on to the next round.
Already there are Creamline and PayMaya who secured the top spots in the Final Four after their respective impressive runs in the preliminary round.
