PVL: Ultra Fast Hitters zap Army for solo lead in quarters
John Vic De Guzman and PLDT Home Fibr are one win away from the semifinals

Only John Vic De Guzman was in double-digits for PLDT Home Fibr on Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

It didn’t matter, however, as all of the Ultra Fast Hitters were online in a three-set blanking of Philippine Army, 25-14, 26-24, and 25-20 in the continuation of the quarterfinals of the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference.

De Guzman had 10 points to his name, all but two coming from spikes, while Mark Alfafara and Kheeno Franco both chipped in nine markers of their own.

Those three started off hot as PLDT Home Fibr cruised in the first frame before the Troopers finally put up a fight.

Trailing by one, 22-23, in the second, however, De Guzman unleashed a 4-1 finishing kick to snatch the set for the Ultra Fast Spikers.

They would not look back to ascend to 2-0 in the round robin quarterfinas.

PLDT Home Fibr only had one player in double-digits, but also counted five others who contributed somewhere between five to nine markers. “Mas nagkaka-chemistry na yung team. Kailangan talaga namin maging sure yung jelling namin for us to reach our potential,” head coach Odjie Mamon said post-game.

Now alone atop the leaderboard in the quarters, they look to clinch a spot in the semifinals when they take on Philippine Air Force a week from now.

On the other hand, Army hopes for a mighty rebound following their first loss in two games in the round. Antonio Torres was the lone bright spot for them with 10 points.

Up next for them is winless Intituto Estetico Manila.

Defending champion Cignal HD and upstart Vice and Co. are already in the semifinals of the tournament.

The last two Final Four berths will then go to the top two finishers in the round robin quarterfinals among PLDT Home Fibr, Army, Air Force, and IEM.
