Cignal made short work of PLDT Home Fibr to move a step closer to a return trip to the Finals.
Defending champion Cignal silenced the big guns of PLDT Home Fibr to essay a 25-22, 25-20, 26-24 Game 1 win in the best-of-three Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference semifinals at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The HD Spikers showed no signs of rust despite a long layoff following a good prelims run that earned then an outright Final Four seat.
Cignal clogged the front of the net with superb defense to frustrate the Ultra Fast Hitters' main weapons in Mark Alfafara and John Vic De Guzman.
Five-time UAAP Most Valuable Player Marck Espejo led the way for the HD Spikers with 20 points anchored on 19 kills.
Rex Intal and Ysay Marasigan added 12 and 10 markers, respectively, for Cignal, which tallied 11 kill blocks to highlight its choking net defense.
Game 2 of the series is on Wednesday.
Ish Polvorosa got the starting position as playmaker and dished out 34 excellent sets for the HD Spikers, who exacted revenge on their prelims tormentors.
Alfafara was limited to only 11 points, a far cry from his 29-point output in their first meeting with Cignal, while De Guzman had a quiet outing with 10 markers.
De Guzman, who had 21 points against the HD Spikers in the prelims, bled for 10-of-22 attacks while Alfafara had worst with 9-of-26.
