PVL: Perlas Spikers shoot for breakthrough Finals trip
BanKo goes for the Finals clincher against PayMaya.

Red-hot BanKo seeks to finish off PayMaya and formally book a championship ticket in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Game 2 of the best-of-three semifinals series is set at 2:00 p.m. and will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166 and via livestream.

The Perlas Spikers drew first blood last Sunday with a 25-19, 26-28, 25-23, 25-23 win behind Thai import Jutarat Montripila’s 31-point explosion.

BanKo now looks to advance in the Finals for the first time after consecutive fifth place finishes last year in the Reinforced and Open Conferences.

The Perlas Spikers are on an eight-game winning streak since the last two games of the preliminary round but head coach Dong Dela Cruz wants his wards to guard against complacency.

“‘Yun ang medyo i-aano ko sa mga players ko, dapat sila maging kumpyansa kasi malakas na team ang PayMaya anytime pwede sila bumalik,” he said. “‘Yun ang nakakatakot ‘yung pagbalik nila.”

“But syempre hindi kami magpapakampante, kung ano ang ginawa namin ngayon hihigitan pa namin next game,” added Dela Cruz, who will also bank on American Kia Bright and his locals led by Nicole Tiamzon, Joy Dacoron, Amy Ahomiro, Dzi Gervacio and setter Jem Ferrer.

But the High Flyers are looking to extend the series to a decider on Friday.

“Sana yung nangyari sa amin (sa Game 1) makatulong sa amin para lumakas ulit ang loob nila kasi di mo matatanggap na natalo ka ng ganoon lang,” said PayMaya coach Roger Gorayeb.

American Tess Rountree, who had 31 markers the last time out, and Shelby Sullivan and locals Grethcel Soltones, Jerrili Malabanan, Celine Domingo and sette Jasmine Nabor must bring their A-game to survive.
