PVL: Jet Spikers claim Reinforced Conference crown
Philippine Air Force ruled the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference men's tournament.
Philippine Air Force reclaimed its lofty spot in men’s volleyball, ending a long title drought with a sweet sweep of dethroned archrival Cignal on Wednesday.
Bryan Bagunas showed the way for Air Force with 30 points in the Jet Spikers’ 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-25, 15-13, Game 2 win in the best-of-three Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference championship series at the MOA Arena.
Bagunas, who was named Finals MVP, poured 28 attacks and had eight digs while Ranran Abdilla added 18 markers with all but one coming off kills for the Jet Spikers. Jeffrey Malabanan finished with 12 points including the quick kill that pushed Air Force at match point and the championship-clinching combination attack at the middle.
The Jet Spikers, who took the opening match also in a thrilling five-set encounter, won their first commercial tournament crown after ruling the defunct V-League’s 2016 Open and Reinforced Conferences.
“Masaya kaming lahat kasi nabawi na namin ang championship at hindi basta-bastang championship. Sobrang hirap na laban (ang pinagdaanan namin),” said Jet Spikers coach Rhovyl Verayo, whose squad lost to Cignal in the same conference last season before ending at third spot in the Open tournament.
Air Force took a 12-10 lead in the fifth set only to see the HD Spikers close the gap, 13-12. Malabanan pushed the Jet Spikers at match point.
The Jet Spikers committed an error on the next play before Malabanan sealed the win with a thunderous attack.
Conference MVP Marck Espejo blasted 38 kills for 41 points in a lost cause for Cignal. Wendel Miguel scored 11 points while Ysay Marasigan got nine for the HD Spikers.
