Ateneo de Manila University will skip the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Collegiate Conference but is looking to join the Open Conference later this year.
Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles head coach Oliver Almadro would rather join the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference later this year than participating in the collegiate tournament slated next week.
The mentor, who replaced Tai Bundit in the position after the UAAP Season 80, said that the Katipunan-based squad will skip the Collegiate Conference that will open on July 21 as the Lady Eagles are still in the process of rebuilding their team and because of conflict in academic schedules of the players.
“Ako ang alam ko talaga Ateneo won’t join the collegiate conference because ang pasukan namin ay mid-August so most of our players came in from vacation,” said Almadro, who has in his hands a tall task to bring the Lady Eagles back to its former glory after missing the UAAP Finals last season for the first time in seven years.
The mentor, who steered the Blue Eagles to three straight UAAP titles from Seasons 77 to 79, explained that most of his key returnees are yet to return from their vacation while new comers are yet to settle in on his system.
“As of now I’m a transition coach, marami akong rookies and ang mga veterans ko nagbakasyon, actually last week lang nagdadatingan,” he said. “It’s too late for us for preparation kasi alam naman natin na next week PVL Collegiate Conference na. Too early for me as a transition coach ‘yung collegiate conference.”
Ateneo failed to advance to the Final Four of last year's Collegiate Conference.
Almadro plans to use the coming months as preparation for his team heading into the Open Conference where he hopes to field the Lady Eagles against strong and seasoned club teams which include the recently crowned Reinforced Conference champion Creamline.
“I’m hoping that they’ll allow us to join the Open Conference. We are really willing to join the Open Conference,” said Almadro. “No matter mabigat ang kalaban namin, we are willing to join the open conference both men and women’s.”
