PVL: UP, Adamson cop opening day wins
University of the Philippines survived a five-set duel against De La Salle University.

John Mark Millete displayed his scoring prowess after dropping 31 points to lead University of the Philippines to a marathon 23-25, 25-19, 25-27, 25-22, 15-12, win over De La Salle University Saturday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Collegiate Conference men’s division at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Millete uncorked 26 kills, four kill blocks and an ace to for the Fighting Maroons, who peppered the Green Spikers’ defense with 60 attack points and nine service winners.

Joshua Castillo debuted with 16 points while Gian San Pascual got 12 for the Diliman-based squad.

DLSU threw away 35 points off errors including crucial miscues in the fifth set.

Skipper Cris Dumago had 24 points while Geraint Bacon and John David Delos Reyes posted 12 markers each for the Green Spikers, who are hoping to find a new go-to-guy after the graduation of top hitter Raymark Woo.

Meanwhile, another UAAP team Adamson University claimed an opening day win after dropping NCAA Season 93 runnerup Arellano University, 25-22, 26-24, 22-25, 26-24.

Team captain Paolo Pablico scattered 27 attacks for 30 points while George Labang had 13 markers including four kill blocks for the Falcons.

Christian Dela Paz had 24 points while Demmy Lapuz and Christian Lapuz scored 12 each for Adamson.

In the third match, University of Sto. Tomas cruised to an easy 25-19, 25-13, 25-20, win over Far Eastern University.

The Tigers jumped on a suprised Tamaraws to join Adamson and UP in the opening day winners' list.

Jayvee Sumagaysay hammered eight kills for 13 points while Manuel Medina and Genesis Redido got 11 and 10 markers, respectively.    

FEU was out of sync the whole match with Mark Calado and Redijohn Paler providing the only bright spot for the Tams with nine and eight points, respectively.
