Bryan Bagunas tows UAAP champion National University to a four-set win over NCAA title-holder University of Perpetual Help.
Power-hitting Bryan Bagunas anchored National University’s scoring barrage as the UAAP champions Bulldogs toppled NCAA king University of Perpetual Help, 25-18, 27-25, 23-25, 25-16, Sunday to open their campaign in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
As expected the titans of the country’s two most prestigious collegiate leagues engaged in an action-packed collision but it was the Bulldogs who emerged triumphant to join other opening day winners Adamson University, University of the Philippines and University of Sto. Tomas.
Bagunas, who led NU to copping the UAAP Season 80 title after dethroning Ateneo de Manila University, scored 24 points with 19 coming off kills. The UAAP Finals MVP and Reinforced Conference Finals MVP when he led Air Force to the throne a few weeks back outplayed Altas’ top hitter Joebert Almodiel, the NCAA Season 93 Rookie/MVP, who only had 10 points.
Angelo Almendres backed Bagunas with 13 points while Madzlan Gampong and Kim Malabunga finished with 11 and 10 markers, respectively, for the Bulldogs.
NU was solid on offense but also displayed great effort at the net, scoring 16 kill blocks with Malabunga submitting six and Gampong adding three.
Ronniel Rosales led Perpetual with 14 points while comebacking Esmail Kasim posted 12.
Meanwhile, College of St. Benilde beat San Beda University, 25-21, 15-25, 28-26, 27-25, in the second game.
Ruvince Abrot, a transferee from University of the East, had 22 points to lead the Blazers while Roniey Adviento posted 11 markers.
Jomaru Amagan had 16 points for the Red Spikers while Patrick Palattao and Angelo Torres added 12 and 11 markers, respectively.
