Far Eastern University escaped with a five set win over upset-conscious College of St. Benilde.
Far Eastern University squandered a two-set lead but recovered just in time to stave off College of St. Benilde’s upset scare, 25-19, 32-30, 15-25, 24-26, 15-4, Sunday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Tamaraws jumped to an 8-2 lead in the deciding frame to dictate the tempo early and take the fight out of the Lady Blazers, who committed crucial miscues in the set that hastened their downfall.
Rookie Lycha Ebon made her presence felt in her debut after scoring 11 points while starting in all five sets for FEU, the runner-up last year.
Celine Domingo led the Lady Tams with 14 points including 12 from attacks while Jerrili Malabanan and Jeanette Villareal scored 11 and 10 markers, respectively.
FEU went up 2-0 in the match before CSB exploited the Lady Tams’ poor reception game in the next two frames to force the fifth set. FEU moved at match point, 24-23 in the fourth set but rookie France Elize Ronquillo sent her service short before CSB scored the next two points to put the match into a decider.
“Di ko nga alam. Medyo nag-relax noong third and fourth (sets). Sabi ko nga sa kanila ang volleyball hindi natatapos sa two sets lang. Don’t stop, keep fighting pa rin. Nag-collapse kami sa service receive. Then noong fifth set naka-recover na,” said FEU coach George Pascua.
CSB cut its fifth set deficit to 8-4 before the Lady Tams charged to a closing 7-0 scoring blitz to take the win.
Marites Pablo had 20 points while Jan Daguil and Klasrisa Abriam scored 18 and 12 markers, respectively, for the Lady Blazers, who gave away 47 points off errors.
