University of Sto. Tomas defeated University of Perpetual Help in straight sets for its second win and a share of the lead.
University of Sto. Tomas shook off a rusty start to beat the smaller but very gritty University of Perpetual Help, 25-23, 25-22 25-16, Wednesday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Tigresses needed to comeback from deficits in the closing stretch of the first two sets before cruising in the third to pocket their second win in as many outings tied with Far Eastern University.
Rookie Eya Laure scored 12 points with all coming off attacks while Fil-Italian Milena Alessandrini scattered 11 markers and 10 digs for the Espana-based squad.
Kecelyn Galdones and Ysabel Jimenez combined for 11 points for the Tigresses.
“Yun na nga, slow start, medyo nagkakapaan pa ang mga bata kanina. Ganoon din sa Perps, ano lang kami, score kami ng isa, score sila ng isa, error kami, error ang kabila,” said UST coach Kungfu Reyes. “Ganoon ang naging flow ng laro kaya taas-baba, taas-baba lang. Hanggang sa dulo, so nagkakatalo na lang pagdating ng 21, 22, doon nagkaka-angatan.”
UST went behind 21-19 in the opening set before mounting a 6-2 rally to steal the frame. The Lady Altas again took a 19-17 lead in the second frame only to see the Tigresses overtake then once again in the closing stretch.
UST controlled the third frame, jumping to an 11-4 lead to cruise to victory.
The Lady Altas dropped to 0-2 slate.
Bianca Tripoli was the only Perpetual player in double figures with 14 points while Cindy Imbo got seven.
