Ruvince Abrot and another fellow recruit from University of the East celebrated their first appearances with the College of St. Benilde Blazers with a victory against San Beda University, stealing the thunder from their veteran teammates in one of two matches on the second day of the men’s division of the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference.
Abrot, who played for the UE Red Warriors for two years, broke through the Red Lions’ net defense with 20 attacks to finish with 22 and Roniey Adviento, also a former Red Warrior, contributed 11 to push the Blazers to a four-set win in their PVL debut.
That should be reason enough for Coach Arnold Laniog to feel good.
Instead, he walked to the locker room tight-lipped and unsmiling. He immediately called the attention of his celebrating players, silencing them with a long dressing-down.
The coach, a former beach volley champion and architect of St. Benilde’s first and only NCAA indoor title during the time of the celebrated Johnvic de Guzman, disliked how the Blazers played individually, which in his opinion buried them in an avalanche of 42 errors.
“Nagkanya-kanya ang mga bata,” he said upon emerging from the locker room. “Ipinaintindi ko sa kanila na mas maganda ang panalo kung may teamwork.”
Coach Laniog acknowledged that they are up against much tougher opposition in the second edition of the PVL Collegiate Conference even with the absence of defending champion Ateneo de Manila University.
Primarily, he hopes to build team cohesiveness with the PVL exposure.
Besides Abrot and Adviento, the newcomers on the team are Franz Emille Almonte, Renald Ian Ugalde, Josh Renan Montano, Rodd Tyron Rojas, Bryan Dumaran and Joshua de Sequera.
The oldtimers are Kevin Magsino, Anthony Bautista, Owen Bacani, Ajian Paul Dy, Francis Basilan (team captain) and Jerico San Miguel.
Assisting Coach Laniog is Jose Roque.
