The coach who discovered and turned former Lady Stag Grethcel Soltones into a three-time NCAA MVP is a joy to watch in this second season of the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference.
Known to strongly and loudly dispute what he thinks is a miscall by the referee, Coach Roger Gorayeb is as cool as a cucumber as he directs the present crop of his San Sebastian College - Recoletos players standing or seated from the bench.
Not even a call that, in his opinion, went unjustly against the Lady Stags could get his goat. He would just shake his head still smiling.
Or he would taunt the ref in good spirit.
“Lagot kayo baka isumbong kayo ng mga bata ko sa mga tatay nila.”
This one he hollered to first referee Jeff Lopez after the latter slapped a net violation on a Lady Stag during the match pitting San Sebastian against coach Kungfu Reyes’ University of Santo Tomas’ Tigresses.
Reyes was heard telling Gorayeb that he had a lot of rookies on his squad this season when they shook hands before the game started.
To which Gorayeb replied, “Mas maraming bago sa team ko ngayon. Iisa nga lang beterano ang natira sa akin.”
Gorayeb, a jolly and generous person outside the court, was referring to team captain Joyce Sta. Rita, the lone carryover from his compact seven-player NCAA line-up last year. Having 13 rookies in his hands explains why the coach is taking everything in stride these days.
Sta. Rita made a strong impact in last season’s NCAA following the graduation of the powerful Soltones, ably carrying the cudgels for the Lady Stags and reaping the second best middle blocker award in the process.
Further toughened up by her PVL exposure in the Reinforced Conference as a member of the Tacloban Fighting Warays, Sta. Rita, according to former setter-teammate Vira Guillema, is “super galing now.”
“Sana ako pa rin ang nagse-set kay Joyce,” Guillema said with longing while watching the SSC-R-FEU game.
The Lady Tamaraws pinned loss no. 2 on the Lady Stags in straight sets.
The complete SSC-R lineup includes Mary Rhose Dapol, Shannai Shane Requierme, Karla Jane Santiago, Colen Dorothy Arevalo, Sofia Ashtara Sarmiento, Airll Alexis Moralina, Zemineth Pearl Medenila, Alexia Vea Sison, Kamille Josephine Amaka Tan, Reizabelle Ortiz, Jamille Veronica Carreon, Jewelle Bermillo and Joyce Sta. Rita.
