University of Sto. Tomas is enjoying the edge of having the presence of a super rookie in Eya Laure.
More than what Eya Laure put up on the stats sheet, University of Sto. Tomas assistant coach Ian Fernandez was particularly happy with the rookie’s attitude inside the court.
Facing a tough team in University of the Philippines, an acid test for the Tigresses in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Collegiate Conference, Laure showed nerves of steel and not a bit of the usual rookie jitters among freshmen in big games.
Laure showed moxie and court swag as she led UST to a come-from-behind 22-25, 25-20, 25-18, 26-24, win over the Lady Maroons on Sunday for the Tigresses’ fourth win in as many outings.
“Ito kasing batang to simula Grade 5 katabi na kasi kami ni coach Kungfu (Reyes) nito so alam ko kung paano siya gumalaw,” said Fernandez, who called the shots after head coach Kungfu Reyes joined the national women’s volleyball team in its training in Okayama, Japan.
Laure, a standout from UST high school, scored 18 points coming off 12 kills, five aces and a kill block. The freshman is averaging 12.75 points per game for the Tigresses, filling the scoring void left by Sisi Rondina and Dimdim Pacres, who skipped the conference.
“Sabi ko nga sa inyo ‘yung body language ng ibang bata (rookies), syempre medyo bago sa akin ito kasi hindi ko nakitaan nung kung anong sinasabi kong body language ng mga ibang rookies,” said Fernandez.
Laure even showed her swag and passion especially in the third set when she gave a little stare down on the Lady Maroons after a kill that definitely pumped up her teammates and entertained the crowd.
The arena echoed with “Eya, Eya” chants from UST faithful.
“Masarap ‘yung feeling kasi parang first time ko naranasan na ganun talaga na sobrang dami din,” said Laure. “Masaya kasi sinisigaw nila ‘yung Eya na ‘yun na nasa UST ako hindi ako nasa ibang school.”
With what Laure is showing this pre-season tournament, one could just imagine what more she has in store.
