University of Sto. Tomas claimed the first Final Four seat and preserved its unbeaten card.
Other than having trouble with their reception and passing game in the second set, University of Sto. Tomas continued to wreak havoc in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Collegiate Conference men’s division and formally booked a spot in the Final Four.
The Tigers recovered from a second set meltdown and added University of the Philippines to their list of victims with a four-set, 25-22, 19-25, 25-22, 25-18, victory Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
UST extended their perfect run to seven games and kept its tight grip of the solo lead.
But the Tigers needed to adjust after the first two frames with the Fighting Maroons firing heavy serves.
“Second set according doon sa data nagkarga talaga ng service ang UP tapos ang tagal ng adjustment. Hindi agad nasunod ng mga bata ang instructions ko pero noong third set nakuha naman ang instructions so ayun back to business kami,” said UST coach Odjie Mamon.
Joshua Umandal led the Tigers with 17 points anchored on 15 attacks while Jayvee Sumagaysay had 14 markers. Tyrone Carodan added 12 and Genesis Redido finished with 10 for the Espana-based squad.
UP slid to 4-3 card and landed in a three-way tie with Adamson University and Far Eastern University.
Skipper John Millete was the only player in double figures for the Maroons with 23 points.
Meanwhile, NCAA champion University of Perpetual Help prevailed over collegiate rival Arellano University, 25-16, 27-25, 24-26, 25-20, for its second win in seven outings.
Reigning UAAP MVP Joebert Almodiel led the Altas with 17 points, Ridzuan Muhali got 15, Roniel Rosales chipped in 13 while Louie Ramirez and John Patrick Ramos had 12 each.
The Chiefs bowed down for the seventh time in as many games.
