San Beda University remained in contention for the last Final Four seat.
San Beda University kept its Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Collegiate Conference campaign alive and narrowed down the race for the last Final Four spot to only three teams.
Nieza Viray and team captain Cesca Racraquin willed the Lady Red Spikers past NCAA rival University of Perpetual Help, 25-19, 25-15, 9-25, 25-21, Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Mendiola-based squad improved to 2-4 win-loss record tied with College of St. Benilde while booting out the Lady Altas.
San Beda can force a playoff for the right to join unbeaten Adamson University (6-0), Far Eastern University (5-1) and University of Sto. Tomas (5-1) with a win over University of the Philippines (3-3) on Sunday.
“Malaking bagay sa amin kung makakakuha kami ng playoff man lang,” said Lady Red Spikers coach Nemesio Gavino. “Kailangan talunin yung UP kasi humahaba yung laro mas maganda exposure para sa amin kas semifinals mas mabigat ‘yung laban e.”
Viray tallied 19 points with 16 coming off attacks while Racraquin finished with 15 markers built on 11 kills, two aces and two kill blocks while adding nine excellent receptions for the Lady Red Spikers. Satrianni Espiritu had 13 points.
San Beda was sharp in the first two sets, giving the Lady Altas all sorts of problems before Perpetual countered with a strong showing in the third.
The Lady Red Spikers went up 16-11 in the fourth only to be overtaken by the Lady Altas, 19-17. Racraquin, Viray and Espiritu teamed up to carry San Beda back in the game and ignite a closing 8-2 spurt to seal the win.
Cindy Imbo registered 17 points while Hershey Llorente got 11 for the Las Pinas-based squad, which dropped to 1-5 mark.
Perpetual will close its campaign against CSB on Saturday.
A win by the Lady Blazers coupled by San Beda’s victory over UP will force a three-way tie at 3-4. In this scenario, the team with the lowest quotient will be eliminated while the other two will faceoff in a sudden death for the last semis spot.
