"As a super senior, I need to perform what is expected of me." - Marian Buitre.
University of the Philippines super senior Marian Buitre shone the brightest to lift the Lady Maroons to a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-three semifinals series versus Adamson University in the Premier Volleyball League.
The now full-fledged opposite hitter led the Lady Maroons with 25 points, 23 from attacks.
"As a super senior, I need to perform what is expected of me. Hindi naman bago sa akin ang opposite. In my whole stay sa UP, kung anong kulang, dun ako nilalagay. Kunwari kulang sa middle, middle ako. Kulang sa open, open ako," shared the 21-year-old athlete.
"So parang nung first time ko, nahirapan ako syempre. Pero parang mabilis na lang ako nagaadapt kasi parang nasanay na lang ako," said Buitre who was a middle blocker in the last UAAP season.
Buitre looked like a woman on a mission in their game against the Lady Falcons. In her usual forceful and emotional manner, she drilled every ball with the determination to avenge their past heartbreaking losses.
"Siguro kasi lahat ng mga talo namin, alam niyo yung expression na 'panalo na natalo pa.' Lahat ng talo namin parang ganun eh, [kaya] today we came here prepared and to show na contender pa rin kami, lalaban pa rin kami," she said after she brought UP to its first victory against a UAAP team in the PVL collegiate conference.
Coach Godfrey Okumu was all praises for Buitre after her sizzling performance.
"You could see the way Buitre from there, Buitre did a very good job. She would get all the balls and every time we get a chance ball we use our opposite player," Okumu shared.
"I believe Buitre would be unstoppable on Saturday."
Now approaching her fifth year, Buitre, who is a Landscape Architecture student, bared her sacrifices just so she can extend another year for the Lady Maroons. She bypassed taking her thesis class in the past semesters for another shot in college volleyball.
"Thesis na eh, nahihirapan ako."
"Hindi ko muna kinuha yung thesis dati para makapag-extend ako so sabi ko, nasimulan ko na, ano pang point ng pagdedelay ko kung di ko naman na itutuloy saka gusto ko, goal ko talaga bago grumaduate, madala ko man lang sa championship yung team ko," Buitre added.
Buitre and the rest of the Lady Maroons will go all out on Saturday, September 1 versus Adamson to finish the semifinals series early and advance to the championship series.
