PVL: Bulldogs book last Finals seat
Bryan Bagunas led National University to a straight sets win over Far Eastern University to book the last Finals ticket.

Bryan Bagunas played clutch once again to tow National University into the Finals of the Premier Volleyball League Season Collegiate Conference men’s division.

The Bulldogs completed a best-of-three come-from-behind Final Four series win in a Game 3 sweep of Far Eastern University, 25-18, 33-31, 25-14, Wednesday to forge a championship showdown with University of Sto. Tomas.

Game 1 of the best-of-three Finals is on Sunday.

Bagunas came out big especially in the closing stretch of the second frame and finished with 23 points and 18 excellent receptions to lead NU. Kim Malabunga had 12 markers while Francis Saura got 11 including five kill blocks for the Bulldogs, who limited their errors to only 18.

NU, which was surprised by the Tamaraws in the series opener last Saturday before knotting the series the following day, came out smoking to easily claim the opening set but found stiff resistance from the no. 4 seed FEU in the second.

The Bulldogs had to save a couple of set advantages but also surrendered a few in the exciting windup of the frame. Bagunas gave NU a 32-31 lead on a crucial hit at the middle before closing the frame out with an exclamation point off a crosscourt hit.

“Medyo sinuwerte rin kami sa sitwasyon na ‘yun. Nagkataon lang talaga na nu’ng mga last turning point nandoon na si Bryan sa loob,” said NU coach Dante Alinsunurin. “Nanindigan na si Bryan sa opensa namin and nag-break din kami sa service receive namin kaya medyo lumamang na kami sa sitwasyon na ‘yun kaya nakuha namin ang second set. Nakuha na namin ang momentum kaya nagtuluy-tuloy na.”

Redijohn Paler was the only Tams player in double figures with 15 markers while JP Bugaoan and Mark Calado scored eight and seven, respectively.

FEU will face Adamson University in the battle for third series set to begin Sunday.
