Coach Dante Alinsunurin went two out of two for National University in four months, steering the incredibly powerful Bulldogs to the UAAP championship last season and, more recently, the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference title Wednesday.
Amidst the euphoria of landing his latest championship triumph, his fourth for the Bulldogs in a span of six years, Alinsunurin was quick to share the glory with the NU management, his players’ families and generously supportive team managers, a pair of major players in the construction industry.
PVL Season 2 Collegiate Conference Finals MVP and 1st Best Outside Spiker Bryan Bagunas himself gladly volunteered the information that the Bulldogs owe their team managers -- Ms. Alice Eduardo of the Sta. Elena Construction Co. and Dennis ‘Junjun’ Abcede of D.A. Abcede & Associates – big time for what they have accomplished so far.
“Malaking inspirasyon sa amin si Ma’am Alice at si Sir Junjun,” said Bagunas, a native of Batangas. “Namo-motivate kaming mga players na suklian ng magandang laro ang kanilang sobrang suporta at kabutihan sa amin.”
“Sila ang nagsisilbing pangalawang magulang at inspirasyon namin,” added Madz Gampong of Tawi-Tawi City.
“Nakiki-celebrate sila sa kung sinuman ang may berdey sa amin, laging may nakahandang gifts at sorpresa sa celebrant,” explained middle blocker Francis Saura, a discovery from Davao. “Noong nagberdey ako last year, inilipad ako ni Sir Junjun kasama siya sa Davao para mag-celebrate kasama ang pamilya ko.”
During the elimination round of the PVL Collegiate Conference, Abcede flew Bagunas, James Natividad and Fauzi Ismail along with Alinsunurin and NU beach volleyball coach Rhovyl Verayo to Japan as a reward for winning the UAAP beach title as well last season.
Prior to winning the PVL collegiate championship via a sweep of their best-of-three finals playoff with the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, Alinsunurin disclosed that Abcede would fly the whole squad to Japan in January next year, still part of his and Ms Antonio’s incentives for the Bulldogs for winning last season’s UAAP indoor title.
Coach Alinsunurin added that the players also run to Ms. Eduardo and Abcede when they have academic problems.
“Ikinukuha nila ng private tutor ang sinumang player na nanganganib sumemplang ang grades. Ang team managers ang nagbabayad. Pati sa pag-aaral ng mga bata ay nakasubaybay sila.”
