PetroGazz swept Tacloban to open its PVL Season 2 Open Conference on a high note.
PetroGazz weathered Tacloban’s gritty third set stand to carve out a 25-22, 25-14, 26-24, win Saturday to start off its campaign on the right track in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Angels had a shaky opening set before slowly getting their rhythm going to claim a good win in the first of their back-to-back weekend schedule. PetroGazz, which finished sixth in the Reinforced Conference a few months back, will take on Banko on Sunday.
Jessey De Leon made her debut for the Angels, putting up a good performance to help veterans Paneng Mercado, Mary Anne Mendrez and Ranya Musa.
"Masaya siyempre. Every time you get a win you should be happy," said PetroGazz coach Jerry Yee.
But the mentor admitted that he tried to tweak his lineup in the third to give his starters a rest that almost backfired.
"We wanted to let the others play kasi nga back-to-back games tayo so kahit kaunti nakakuha sana ng rest but medyo not too stable but we held on," Yee said.
Mercado finished with 14 points while Mendrez scored 11 off eight attacks and three aces for PetroGazz. Musa posted 10 points while new addition Jonah Sabete got eight for the Angels.
After taking the first two sets, PetroGazz got into a dogfight in the third frame with the Fighting Warays keeping the game close.
Musa put the Angels at match point, 24-23, but Heather Guino-o answered with a kill to force a deuce. Musa again gave PetroGazz the match point advantage on an off speed kill before the Angels sealed the win with a kill block.
Guino-o led Tacloban with nine points while Jovielyn Prado and Mary Anne Esguerra combined for 12 markers.
