Vanessa Gandler (number 5) was one of five rookies who saw action for the Ateneo Lady Eagles in their opening win over Pocari Sweat-Air Force in the PVL Open Conference.
Apart from new head coach Oliver Almadro, the Ateneo Lady Eagles also welcomed the entry of promising newcomers. Five rookies namely Vanessa Gandler, Jaja Maraguinot, Isabela Peralta, Samantha Fanger, and Erika Raagas all saw action in Ateneo's opening match in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference on Sunday afternoon.
Among the newbies, Gandler, who wears jersey number five, saw the most playing time and paid it off with nine points.
"You see Vanie [Gandler] kanina she did a lot, she did very good receives, maaasahan siya, hindi siya ma-error as a rookie," expressed team captain Bea De Leon on their new open spiker from De La Salle Zobel.
"Maraming bagong rookies na magagaling magblock, magaling magspike, all-around players sila which is good for us and kasi syempre nga ‘yun ang kailangan namin na from the bench na inspired na hungry talaga for the win," she added.
The Lady Eagles' lineup in the PVL is now composed of eight familiar faces and six rookies. With that, Coach Almadro knows that he has to take the adjustments gradually for both sectors.
Nonetheless, he expressed his delight with the neophytes' performances.
"I'm happy with the rookies, kung sino gamitin mo, andyan lang naman yan eh," said the emotional coach. "Syempre 'di naman natin pwedeng madaliin yung rookies. Ang importante lang yung confidence nila always there."
