PVL: Ateneo-Motolite overcomes Pocari with a thrilling win
Ateneo-Motolite opens PVL Open Conference with a thriller victory over Pocari Sweat-Air Force, 25-23, 17-25, 25-20, 30-28.

Ateneo-Motolite opened the Oliver Amadro-era with with a thrilling four set victory over Pocari Sweat-Air Force, 25-23, 17-25, 25-20, 30-28, in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference on Sunday afternoon at the Imus City Sports Complex.

The Lady Eagles overcame a late run by the Lady Warriors in the fourth set after Pocari equalized at 22-all anchored on Myla Pablo's offense. From there, it was a see-saw battle.

However, in the end, senior Kat Tolentino took over with a raging block and captain Bea de Leon finished it off with an attack from the middle.

"Ready na nga ako sa fifth set pero the players refused to lose eh. Nag step yung mga dapat mag step up. I really thank them," said Almadro, who replaced Tai Bundit as head coach of the Lady Eagles.

Aside from the new head coach, a handful of impressive Ateneo rookies like Vanessa Gandler and Jaja Maraguinot also made their debut in the match. They joined a good mix of veterans like Tolentino, De Leon, setter Deanna Wong, Maddie Madayag, Dani Ravena and Kim Gequillana. Former Rookie of the Year Jules Samonte and Ponggay Gaston were in uniform, but the duo didn't see action in order to prepare for the UAAP Season 81 beach volleyball tournament.

"We just want to learn in this tournament. We will try kung ano maabot namin," Almadro added.

Tolentino scored the most with 19 points while De Leon chipped in 12 points.

For Pocari, Pablo's impressive 30 points went to waste together with Jeanette Panaga's 16 points.

Ateneo will try to make it two in a row on October 6 versus the Petro Gazz Angels while Pocari Sweat-Air Force will seek for a bounce back win September 26 against Petro Gazz.
