IMUS CITY --- PetroGazz spoiled the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference debut of Alyssa Valdez and Creamline in front of a partisan crowd inside the jam-packed Imus Sports Complex here Saturday.
The Angels snapped a two-game slide with a 27-25, 17-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-5, win to even their win-loss record to 2-2.
PetroGazz showed nerves of steel and veteran composure in the fifth set to score a huge upset over the title-favorite Cool Smashers, who played without top libero Melissa Gohing (sore throat).
Jonah Sabete and Cherry Nunag scored 13 points each to lead the Angels. Sabete smashed 11 attacks to highlight her hot spiking night while adding 14 digs and 11 excellent receptions for PetroGazz.
Cai Baloaloa and Paneng Mercado posted 11 and 10 markers, respectively, for the Angels, which frustrated the Creamline spikers with 13 kill blocks.
The Angels fought back from an early 0-4 deficit in the deciding frame with a sizzling counterattack to take a 7-4 lead. The Cool Smashers stopped the bleeding on the next play before stringing eight consecutive points to silence the crowd and complete an upset.
“Mas may experience yata kami this time around kasi ‘di ba may mga late-game loses kami, so mahabang usap, mahabang plano and stick tayo sa plano natin and ayun nadaan naman sa usap,” said Angels coach Jerry Yee.
PetroGazz will take on Iriga-Navy on Sunday in its second back-to-back weekend schedule.
Valdez finished with 26 points anchored on 24 kills while Jema Galanza and Michele Gumabao got 14 and 12 markers, respectively, for the Cool Smashers.
