PVL: Angels bag back-to-back wins
PetroGazz swept its back-to-back weekend schedule for its third win in five games in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference.
Rachel Austero came up big at crunch time to help PetroGazz weather the comeback attempt of listless Iriga-Navy, 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 28-26, Sunday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Angels improved to 3-2 win-loss record as they picked their second straight win a day after scoring a huge five-set upset over title favorite Creamline in Imus, Cavite.
Austero pulled off the exciting win after hitting an offspeed kill to push the Angels at its second match point advantage before landing the game-clinching ace to seal their fifth game in nine days.
“Ayun swerte siguro kami na kahit papaano nakakakapit tayo sa games so long rest pero syempre training pa rin, konting pahinga,” Angels coach Jerry Yee, whose squad will get a much-deserved rest before marching back into battle on Saturday against Ateneo-Motolite.
Paneng Mercado led PetroGazz with 12 points, all from attacks, while Ranya Musa got 11 off eight hits and three kill blocks in two sets of play. Cai Baloaloa, Chie Saet and Cherry Nunag got nine markers each while Austero scored all of her points in the fourth set off the bench.
PetroGazz squandered a 15-11 lead midway in the fourth set as they allowed the Lady Oragons to counter with five unanswered points. The Angels went down, 22-24, before forcing a duece after Sabete's back-to-back hits.
A service error by Sabete gave Iriga-Navy back the set point advantage. PetroGazz answered with two straight points for a 26-25 lead. Florence Madulid tied it again at 26 before Austero's heroics.
The Lady Oragons continued to struggle in the tournament after losing their fourth straight in as many outings. Grazielle Bombita got 21 points, Madulid finished with 17 while Divine Eguia posted 14 markers for Iriga-Navy.
