PVL: Angels discover depth in grueling schedule

PetroGazz's consecutive games worked wonders on Jerry Yee's bench depth.
PetroGazz played five games in a grueling nine-day stretch.
Include their daily training and the Angels are building their reputation as the iron ladies of the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference.
Despite playing with a very tough schedule, head coach Jerry Yee got a chance to shuffle his roster and tap different rotations.
And his team’s depth was tested Sunday in the Angels’ 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 28-26, win over Iriga-Navy.
Coming off a five-set upset win over title favorite Creamline last Saturday in an out-of-town game in Imus, Cavite, the Angels played sluggish and showed signs of fatigue against a winless rival.
“Of course plus ‘yung training ‘di ba? Ang dami kino-correct syempre hindi naman pwedeng relaxed lang ‘yung training so pagod talaga eh. Kahit sinong bunutin natin ganoon eh, so fatigue (is) shooting (in),” said Yee.
To remedy this, the mentor gave all but reserve libero Rica Enclona minutes on the court.
“Wala eh (to overcome fatigue) hugot tayo nang hugot ng players kahit sino ita-try natin kung sinong andyan buti na lang meron tayong pwedeng hugutin and ibalik kung sino ang nandyan,” Yee said. “So ‘yun naman ang ginawa natin so na-outlast natin sila.”
With his starters fading in the third set, Yee started Ranya Musa in the fourth and pulled Rachel Austero off the bench.
The duo delivered with Austero scoring all her four points in the frame including an offspeed hit and an ace that sealed Petrogazz’s third win in five outings.
“Again, we tell them, ‘yung mga coaching staff, na ikot tayo, gamit tayo ng timeout. Kumbaga gamitin natin ang depth natin kung anong meron,” Yee said.
The Angels will get a much-deserved five-day rest before their next game on Saturday against Ateneo-Motolite.
“Rest talaga kami on Monday and on Tuesday pukpok na naman tayo,” said Yee. “Titimplahin mo ang ensayo mo at energy level mo para pagdating ng game mayroon talagang high energy.”
