Ateneo de Manila University passed with flying colors its first test as a team post-Marck Espejo era after the Blue Eagles’ emphatic 25-15, 25-17, 25-15, victory over Fury in the Spikers’ Turf Open Conference at the Blue Eagle Gym.
Returning Antony Koyfman, who skipped UAAP Season 80 because of academic problems, led the Blue Eagles with 14 points while Chumason Njigha and Ishmael Rivera added 12 and 11 markers, respectively, to deliver head coach Timothy Sto. Tomas’ debut win as mentor.
“I’m happy. Timmy is a very good coach also. He’s been with me matagal na so alam niya kung ano ang dapat gawin even without me,” said a very proud former Ateneo head coach Oliver Almadro, who steered the Katipunan-based squad to a three-peat in the UAAP with five-time MVP Espejo and prized setter Ish Polvorosa.
“They know what to do and nandoon pa ang mga players na buong-buo ang character with their faith, trust and courage so I know they will pay well there sa Spikers’ Turf,” added Almadro, who himself celebrated a five-set win as his Ateneo-Motolite Lady Eagles defeated PetroGazz in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference.
Meanwhile, Joeven Dela Vega led PLDT Home to a 25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 25-19 win over Instituto Estetico Manila.
Dela Vega finished with 14 points while the troika of Jayvee Sumagaysay, Henry Pecana and John Vic De Guzman added 11 each for the Power Hitters.
Ysay Marasigan and Wendel Miguel dropped 15 and 14 markers, respectively, to tow Cignal to a 25-17, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21, victory over Prima-FEU.
